Sony wins IPL TV rights for Rs 23k Crore; Star bags deal with digital in

In an intense bidding war on the day 2 of the IPL Media Rights Auction 2022, the IPL TV goes to Sony while the Star has bagged a deal with the digital platforms’ rights.

In an intense bidding war between the media giants at the IPL Media Rights Auction 2022 by the Board of Cricket for Control in India (BCCI), Sony has bagged the deal of IPL TV while the Star will continue to hold the rights of digital platforms. The Bidding war began on Sunday, June 12, 2022, and continued till Monday. There has been official confirmation by the BCCI on the Bidding results but according to the sources, “Package A has gone to one party while Package B has gone to another.”

Package A and B collectively account for Rs 43,255 crore (A: 23575. B: 19680). The bidding is ongoing to broadcast the IPL for five years in the span of 2023 – 2027. This is happening for the first time in the history of Indian sports that a whopping amount is thrown in the ring. In 2017, closed bidding has been revamped and the media giants such as Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL), Reliance-Viacom 18 and Disney Star Network, kept peaking the heat of the bidding war.
