After finishing at the bottom of the IPL 2024 points table, Mumbai Indians (MI) head coach Mark Boucher opened up about the challenges the team faced over the past two months. MI’s season came to an abrupt end after a defeat to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), marking their tenth loss.
In the final match, MI captain Rohit Sharma had a mixed performance. Boucher addressed Rohit’s future with the team, stating, “For me, he is a master of his own destiny. It’s a big auction next season who knows what’s going to happen?”
Boucher highlighted Rohit’s season as one of two halves. He started strong, hitting the ball well, and even scored a superb century against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). However, his performance became inconsistent, with several single-digit scores in his last six appearances. Despite this, Rohit ended the season on a high note, scoring 68 off 38 deliveries against LSG.
Reflecting on the season, Boucher mentioned a conversation he had with Rohit. “I asked him what’s next? and Rohit said ‘the World Cup’.” This indicates Rohit’s focus on future opportunities despite a tough season.
MI fans experienced mixed emotions during the final match at Wankhede Stadium. While they cheered for Rohit‘s explosive fifty, they were disappointed with the team’s overall performance.

In the match against LSG, MI chose to field first. LSG’s KL Rahul and Nicholas Pooran played fiery innings, helping their team reach 214/6. Despite a strong start by MI openers Rohit Sharma and Dewald Brevis, rain interrupted the game briefly. Naman Dhir’s impressive 62* run knock brought hope to MI, but they ultimately fell short, losing by 18 runs.
The season’s end highlights the need for reflection and strategy changes for MI as they look forward to future competitions.
