The journey of Rahul Chahar: how a young boy from Rajasthan made it big in the IPL

Rahul Chahar and his elder brother Deepak Chahar trained under his uncle as they did not have a lot of facilities. Rahul is now the go-to bowler of Rohit Sharma whenever he needs a breakthrough.

Rahul Desraj Chahar was born in Bharatpur, Rajasthan in 1999. The 21-year-old is a right-arm leg break spinner and a right-hand batsman. Being from a city which does not have a lot of facilities, Rahul along with his elder brother Deepak Chahar trained under his uncle. At the tender age of 16, he made his first-class debut against Odhisha and performed well for his side. His performances caught a lot of eyes and he was picked for the Indian under-19 side that played against England. He took 10 wickets in 4 matches, which showed immense improvement in his game.

The youngster got picked by the Rising Pune supergiants in 2017 which changed his career altogether. Playing under MS Dhoni helped him learn the game much better. He only played 3 games but that season but believes he learnt a lot. In 2018, Mumbai Indians picked the younger Chahar for a whopping 1.9 crore and has been playing for them ever since. Skipper Rohit Sharma believes in the bowler and gives him the ball confidently when he needs a breakthrough.

Coming from a lesser-known city of the country, Rahul Chahar is one of the most reliable players of the most successful franchise of the tournament. In the two matches, he has played for MI this season he has been able to pick 3 wickets. He has been Rohit Sharma’s go-to man for a year now and will be hopeful this year as well.
