Mumbai Indians will need to pull off their highest successful run chase in IPL history if they are to overcome Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s mammoth 221/5 total at the Wankhede Stadium in Match 20 of IPL 2025.
RCB posted a massive score on the back of impactful knocks from Virat Kohli (67 off 42), Devdutt Padikkal (37 off 22), Rajat Patidar (64 off 32) and Jitesh Sharma (40 off 19). Kohli and Padikkal stitched a 91-run stand after Philip Salt was dismissed in the second ball of the match. The duo ensured a strong powerplay with 73 runs, but MI bounced back in the middle overs. The turning point came post the strategic timeout when Kohli and Patidar smashed 20 runs off Mitchell Santner’s final over. Patidar’s acceleration led to a quick 25-ball fifty.
Despite Jasprit Bumrah bowling two exceptional overs at the death for just 14 runs, Mumbai leaked 70 runs in the last five overs. Jitesh Sharma played a finishing role with some crisp strokes. Boult, meanwhile, went for 57 in his 4 overs.
With 222 needed for victory, MI must surpass their previous best run chases, which include:
Mumbai Indians’ most successful run chases in IPL:
- 219 vs CSK (Delhi), 2021
- 215 vs PBKS (Mohali), 2023
- 213 vs RR (Mumbai), 2023
- 201 vs SRH (Mumbai), 2023
- 200 vs RCB (Mumbai), 2023
This chase will require something special. Will dew be a factor? Can MI’s top-order click with Rohit Sharma coming in as an Impact Player? And can RCB strike early again like they did with Salt?
All eyes are now on the Wankhede outfield. This one’s going down to the wire!
