Krishnappa Gautam was considered as Ravi Ashwin’s backup revealed Sarandeep Singh

Former Indian selector Sarandeep Singh revealed that Krishnappa Gowtham was considered as a backup for Ravichandran Ashwin during his tenure as a selector. He even said that the player getting picked in India A team for the last 2-3 years because of his performance.

Krishnappa Gowtham got the limelight after he gets picked by Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League auction for a whopping price of 9.25 crore. The all-rounder became the most expensive uncapped Indian player of IPL. Sarandeep Singh even praised Gowtham for his skills and consistency.

“If you see his domestic record, he has been performing all the time. He has been picked for India A for the last 2-3 years and has been doing consistently well. In fact, in case Ravichandran Ashwin was to get injured or was unfit, we were looking at K Gowtham as a back-up spinner. He was in our minds for ODIs and T20Is as well.” Singh said.

Singh admitted that the youngster didn’t get a chance because of having plenty of other spin bowlers in the team at the team. 41 years old, Singh called Gowtham unlucky during his tenure.

“With Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal as well as the all-round brilliance of Ravindra Jadeja, we were blessed with excess options. Even Kedar Jadhav was chipping in with the ball and picking up a few wickets. That’s why we couldn’t pick K Gowtham in the Indian team. So he deserves what he has got.” he added.
