Former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody has highlighted the instrumental role played by Gautam Gambhir in the Kolkata Knight Riders’ decision to retain Andre Russell and Sunil Narine for the upcoming 2024 season of the Indian Premier League.
In a conversation with ESPNcricinfo, Moody emphasized Gambhir’s pivotal role in the retention of Russell and Narine, expressing confidence that Gambhir’s understanding of the players, gained through playing alongside and captaining them, will extract the best from the duo. Both Russell and Narine have been integral members of the KKR squad, with Russell joining in 2014 and Narine in 2012.
Moody acknowledged the phenomenal contributions of Russell and Narine to KKR, considering them indispensable assets to the team. However, he pointed out a minor reservation concerning Russell’s physical condition, underlining that while his skill is unquestionable, maintaining peak fitness is crucial.
Russell’s performance in the previous season showcased his all-round prowess, scoring 227 runs and claiming seven wickets in 14 matches for KKR. The decision to retain these key players for IPL 2024 reflects the team’s confidence in their capabilities and the influential role Gambhir plays in shaping KKR’s strategic decisions.
