Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s long awaited maiden IPL title will forever remain a historic milestone, but it is now linked with a tragic chapter the franchise, fans and cricket community would rather not remember. The loss of 11 lives, including a 4 year old child, during the victory celebrations outside M. Chinnaswamy Stadium has left a deep scar across the cricketing community. What should have been a moment of pure joy turned into a heartbreaking incident, casting a shadow over the celebrations. As Royal Challengers Bengaluru prepare to defend their title in the 2026 season, the memory of that day continues to resonate.
The defending champions will begin their campaign at home against SRH on March 28. In the lead-up to the season opener, both the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) and the franchise (RCB) have taken meaningful steps to honour the victims with dignity and respect.
A memorial plaque is set to be installed near the inner entrance of the stadium, close to the mural area, ensuring that the incident is never forgotten. 11 seats inside the stadium will be permanently reserved as a tribute each symbolising a life lost. These seats, expected to be located in a premium section, will remain unoccupied during every match, silently remembering and paying tribute to the victims.
During the opening fixture of the season, a special tribute will also be held to honour the victims, remembering their memory into the team’s journey moving forward.The gesture reflects a deeper message that cricket extends beyond the boundaries of the game. The reserved seats stand as a strong reminder of the importance of safety, responsibility, and humanity as a cricket community.
