A 22-year-old on debut stepped into a long-standing list of standout first appearances as Cooper Connolly delivered a match-winning knock for Punjab Kings.
His unbeaten 72 against Gujarat Titans now sits among the highest scores on IPL debut, alongside names like Brendon McCullum, Michael Hussey, Shaun Marsh and Kyle Mayers.
Connolly holds nerve in tense chase
Chasing 162, Punjab were cruising at one stage before a collapse changed the game. Connolly, however, stayed calm. He built his innings without forcing the pace early, then picked his moments to attack.
He brought up his fifty off 34 balls and remained unbeaten till the end, guiding the chase with composure. With 16 needed off the last two overs and only three wickets left, he ensured there were no further mistakes, finishing the game with controlled hitting.
It was not just the runs, but the way he stayed till the end that stood out. On a surface where others struggled to settle, he showed patience and clarity in his approach.
Young all-rounder makes early mark
Connolly, a left-arm orthodox, has not been used with the ball so far as a precaution, but his value with the bat was clear in this match.
At 22, he showed signs of a player comfortable under pressure. His shot selection remained simple, and he avoided unnecessary risks even when wickets were falling around him.
Punjab’s win owed a lot to that approach. While others came and went, Connolly stayed, adapted, and finished the job.
It was a strong start to his IPL career and a clear statement that he can handle bigger stages.
