Pant undecided on opening role in IPL 2026

Rishabh Pant has said he is not certain about opening the innings throughout the IPL 2026 season. He described it as a “50-50 call” but confirmed he expects to bat in the top order.

Pant has previously taken on the role of an opener. In his debut season in 2016, he was promoted to open in his third match, where he scored a quick 69 off 40 balls against Gujarat Lions. That innings remains one of his strongest performances at the top.

His early record as an opener in 2016 also included a mix of scores, with innings of 69 off 40, 2 off 8, 32 off 26 and 1 off 2. It showed both his attacking intent and some inconsistency in the role.

Pant is expected to continue contributing in the top order, but the final decision on his batting position may depend on team balance and match conditions as the season progresses.
