Matheesha Pathirana is expected to remain unavailable until around April 15 or 16 in IPL 2026, as Kolkata Knight Riders continue to wait on clearance from Sri Lanka Cricket. The fast bowler is undergoing physical performance tests after requesting a No Objection Certificate, but approval has been delayed due to an injury he sustained during the recent T20 World Cup.
KKR coach Shane Watson said the franchise is working closely with Sri Lanka Cricket on the matter. He made it clear the team will not rush the player’s return. The management wants Pathirana fit and fully ready, with both sides aligned on his recovery timeline.
KKR’s bowling concerns after early setback
Kolkata Knight Riders began their season with a six-wicket defeat to Mumbai Indians, and their bowling struggled, especially in the final overs. KKR failed to defend a total above 220, which exposed a lack of control at the death.
Injuries to Harshit Rana and Akash Deep have already weakened the attack. Pathirana’s absence has made the situation harder, as the side lacks a specialist for the closing overs.
There is also uncertainty around Cameron Green. He has not been bowling, and workload restrictions could limit his role further. That leaves KKR relying on other options who have yet to deliver consistently under pressure.
Need for Pathirana as KKR face SRH
KKR’s problems come into focus again as they prepare to face Sunrisers Hyderabad at Eden Gardens today. It is a high-scoring venue, and another test awaits their bowling unit against a strong batting side.
Without Pathirana, KKR do not have a proven option to manage the death overs. His accuracy and variations are key in that phase, and his absence has already cost them in their opening game.
There is still no confirmed return date beyond mid-April estimates. The focus remains on his fitness and clearance. KKR will hope he joins soon, as their bowling unit continues to face early pressure in the tournament.
