Sri Lankan all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga was picked up by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for Rs 2 crore at the IPL 2026 mini-auction, adding a proven leg-spin option to their bowling attack.

Hasaranga, one of the most impactful wrist-spinners in recent IPL seasons, was released by Rajasthan Royals (RR) ahead of the auction and entered the pool with significant experience despite recent injury setbacks.

IPL career at a glance

Hasaranga has played 37 IPL matches, picking up 46 wickets at a bowling average of 24.33 and an economy rate of 8.41. His best bowling figures in the league stand at 5/18. With the bat, his contributions have been limited, scoring 81 runs at an average of 5.40.

Journey across franchises

Hasaranga made his IPL debut with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in 2021 and enjoyed his most successful season in IPL 2022, when he took 26 wickets, finishing as the second-highest wicket-taker of the tournament. That season also saw him record his career-best figures of 5/18 against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Following his stint with RCB from 2021 to 2023, Hasaranga was part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) squad in 2024 but missed the entire season due to chronic heel pain, which required an extended recovery period. He returned to the IPL with Rajasthan Royals in 2025, before being released ahead of the IPL 2026 auction.

In previous auctions, Hasaranga commanded big money, having been bought for Rs 10.75 crore by RCB in 2022 and Rs 5.25 crore by RR in 2025.

Role at Lucknow Super Giants

By securing Hasaranga for Rs 2 crore, LSG add an experienced international leg-spinner with a strong IPL track record, particularly in the middle overs. His signing provides LSG with additional spin depth and flexibility as they shape their squad for the upcoming season.

The move marks a significant value buy for LSG, given Hasaranga’s past impact and wicket-taking pedigree in the IPL.
