Akash Madhwal joins CSK as replacement for Ayush Mhatre

Chennai Super Kings have signed Akash Madhwal as a replacement for Ayush Mhatre for the remainder of IPL 2026. The move comes after Mhatre was ruled out, forcing CSK to look for a like-for-like option in their pace reserves.

Madhwal’s path to this point has been unusually quick even by IPL standards. He began the season as a net bowler with Mumbai Indians, working behind the scenes without a place in the main squad. Those early weeks were spent bowling in practice, largely out of the spotlight, before CSK came calling.

From nets to squad in the same season

The shift from net bowler to contracted player in the same season underlines how thin the margins can be in the IPL. Akash Madhwal joins CSK for his base price of INR 30 lakh.

For CSK, the decision is practical. They needed a bowler who understands IPL conditions and can step in without much adjustment. Madhwal fits that requirement, having already been around the league environment this season.

A proven record in limited chances

Madhwal has taken 23 wickets in his IPL career so far. His most notable outing remains the 5 for 5 against Lucknow Super Giants in the 2023 Eliminator, still the best bowling figures in an IPL playoff match.

That performance showed his ability to operate under pressure, even if his overall opportunities have been limited. CSK are unlikely to expect immediate impact, but they will see him as a ready option if conditions demand seam bowling changes.

For Madhwal, this is less about redemption and more about access. He moves from the nets to a dressing room where selection is now a real possibility.
