Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) opened their account in the new season with a commanding eight-wicket victory over Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. A stellar unbeaten 97 from Quinton de Kock guided KKR to a comfortable chase of 152, outclassing RR in all departments.
Rajasthan Royals struggle with the bat
Opting to bat first, RR failed to build any momentum as wickets fell at regular intervals. Despite promising starts from Yashasvi Jaiswal (29 off 24) and captain Riyan Parag (25 off 15), RR’s middle order crumbled under KKR’s disciplined bowling attack. Dhruv Jurel fought hard with a 33-run knock, but RR could only manage 151/9 in 20 overs.
Varun Chakravarthy (2/17) was the standout performer with the ball, while Vaibhav Arora and Harshit Rana also picked up two wickets each to restrict RR to a below-par total.
De Kock, Raghuvanshi shine in run chase
In response, KKR lost Moeen Ali early, but de Kock took charge with a scintillating knock, smashing eight fours and six sixes in his 61-ball 97*. The South African wicketkeeper-batter played with authority, ensuring there were no hiccups in the chase.
Young Angkrish Raghuvanshi (22* off 17) provided solid support as KKR cruised to victory in 17.3 overs, handing RR their first defeat of the season.
A statement win for KKR
KKR’s dominant performance in both batting and bowling showcased their intent for the season ahead. With their first points on the board, they will look to carry this momentum forward. Meanwhile, after losing two consecutive matches RR will need to reassess their strategies, especially in the batting department, as they regroup for their upcoming fixtures.
