IPL 2025, CSK vs MI: MS Dhoni not in playing XI? Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad hints at his possible role

As Chennai Super Kings (CSK) prepare to face Mumbai Indians (MI) in their IPL 2025 opener, questions around MS Dhoni’s role in the team continue to dominate the headlines. Speculation about whether the 43-year-old former captain will feature in the playing XI has sparked fresh discussion, but current skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has offered a telling response.

Addressing the media ahead of the high-stakes clash, Gaikwad hinted that Dhoni may not always be in the starting XI but is expected to remain a crucial part of the team, possibly as an Impact Player.

“Sir, he is already an impact player. Every day we get to see him, it inspires a lot – so whatever he is doing at the age of 43 is remarkable. Definitely, he will be looking to contribute in the best way he can,” Gaikwad said when asked about Dhoni’s potential use under the Impact Player rule.

While Dhoni is expected to bat lower down the order—possibly at No. 7 or 8—his influence in the camp remains as strong as ever. Gaikwad praised Dhoni’s preparation and fitness, saying, “A lot of new players have joined the team and sometimes they struggle to strike the ball as good as he is striking it right now.”

In a chat on JioHotstar, Dhoni himself added a touch of humour to the speculation, saying, “I can play for as long as I want for CSK. That’s my franchise. Even if I’m in a wheelchair, they’ll drag me.”

Gaikwad also shed light on Dhoni’s training approach, noting that the veteran keeps his preparation simple and tailored. “He tries to hit as many sixes as possible and focuses on timing. I never thought he was out of shape,” Gaikwad added, comparing Dhoni’s longevity to that of Sachin Tendulkar.

With CSK set to take on arch-rivals MI, all eyes will be on whether Dhoni takes the field or plays a strategic role off it. Regardless of his position, his presence is certain to make an impact.
