IPL 2024 Playoffs: What will happen if the matches get washed out?

The highly anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) season faced unexpected challenges in its final stages as unseasonal rains led to the abandonment of three out of the last eight league matches, including the final fixture. However, cricket enthusiasts can breathe a sigh of relief as the IPL has implemented crucial rule changes to ensure a fair and uninterrupted conclusion to the tournament’s playoffs.

Extra Time Allotted for IPL 2024 Playoffs

With the playoffs set to commence, the consequences of rain interruptions become more significant. To address this concern, the IPL has introduced an extended window for completing rain-affected matches. Playoff matches will be allotted an additional 120 minutes (two hours) to finish the game in case of delays, compared to the regular season’s one-hour buffer.

Reserve Days Introduced for All IPL 2024 Playoff Matches
In a significant move, the IPL has introduced reserve days for all four playoff matches – Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2, and the Final. Previously, only the final had this privilege. If a match is called off due to rain on the scheduled date, it will be rescheduled and played entirely on the reserve day, ensuring both teams get a fair opportunity.

Even with the reserve days in place, rain remains an unpredictable factor. In the event of a playoff match being abandoned on both the scheduled date and the reserve day, the team’s position on the points table at the end of the league stage will determine the winner. The team that finished higher will be declared victorious.

Super Over: Ultimate Tie-Breaker
In the rare case of a tied playoff match, a Super Over will be played to decide the winner. If the Super Over is also tied or cannot be completed due to time constraints, the team ranking higher in the points table will advance.
