IPL 2024: “Never tried to convince Pandya to stay back,” GT coach Ashish Nehra reveals shocking truth

Indian Premier League’s 2024 season is gearing up and fans have already started placing bets on former Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya’s transfer back to Mumbai Indians.

Pandya’s journey from Gujarat Titans to Mumbai Indians has been a topic of interest, particularly since his notable leadership stint with GT, where he propelled the team to title glory in their inaugural IPL season and secured a runner-up position in the subsequent year.

Pandya has been an IPL revelation; since he got picked up by GT, he thrived under Nehra’s management. Signing Pandya paid dividends instantly in GT’s inaugural season as they lifted the title and in the following year, they fell short and finished as runner-ups.

Nehra disclosed that while he did not intervene in Pandya’s decision to join Mumbai Indians, he acknowledged that he would have endeavored to retain him if it were any other franchise.

“I never tried to convince Pandya to stay back. As you play more, you gain experience. I could have stopped him had he gone to any other franchise. He (Pandya) played here for two years but he has gone to a team (MI), where he has played previously for 5-6 years,” Nehra said.

“The manner in which the sport (cricket) is moving, we will have trades and transfers like we see in international soccer. It’s a new challenge for him and may be he will learn something new and we wish him the best,” he said.
