It is a monumental change for the Chennai Super Kings and the Indian Premier League as a whole as MS Dhoni’s retirement from the captaincy moves Shreyas Iyer to the fore as IPL 2024-year’s most experienced leader, symbolizing the dawn of a new era for the league.
With leadership experience at two different franchises – Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders – Iyer has played 55 games in total as a captain.
If anything, this switch could mark the start of a new slate for the IPL, which first hit in the IPL history since the year 2008, the inaugral year. Iyer is followed closely by former Punjab Kings and current Lucknow Super Giants captain KL Rahul, who has 51 games, and Rajasthan Royals’ skipper Sanju Samson, who took over the mantle in 2021 and has captained 45 matches.
Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya has been appointed as captain for Mumbai Indians after Rohit Sharma stepped down from his position.
He previously has 31 games under his belt as a captain and led Gujarat Titans in the 2022 season.
Other players who will captain their teams for the first time in this season are Pat Cummins, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Shubman Gill.
