IPL 2024: How can LSG qualify for IPL playoffs with one game remaining against MI?

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are gearing up to take on the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday (May 17) for their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 fixture.

With Thursday’s game between the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Gujarat Titans (GT) in Hyderabad washed out, Lucknow Super Giants, led by Pat Cummins, have effectively secured their qualification for the playoffs.

Currently, LSG stands at 12 points from 13 matches, and a victory against the five-time champions, MI, could propel them to 14 points. However, their net run rate of -0.787 poses a challenge as they are currently seventh in the standings.

To secure a playoff spot, LSG must defeat MI, and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) must beat the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Saturday. This would result in CSK, DC, RCB, and LSG all ending up on 14 points, thereby bringing the qualification scenario down to net run rate again.

However, if LSG end up bowling first against MI, they risk being eliminated from the tournament straightaway. In case they bat first, they need to defeat MI by 310 runs and hope that RCB emerge triumphant against CSK by 18 runs as well.
