IPL 2022: “Cricket or chess?” Mohammad Kaif questions David Warner’s unwillingness to face first ball while opening

David Warner has been in an impressive form for the Delhi Capitals but the Australian opener has lacked intent while facing match-opener delivery.

David Warner has been in an impressive form in the season and has shouldered the responsibility to get the team across the winning rope. Delhi capitals roped in the Australian opener to fill their opening slot and Warner has been swashbuckling through the season. But an odd is against David Warner when the opener has failed to produce his best while facing the inning-opener delivery. David Warner has become out multiple times in the season while facing the first ball of the inning.

Reports suggest that David Warner has usually put Prithvi Shaw ahead while opening for the team to face the first ball. Warner faced the first ball while partnering inning with Sarfaraz Khan, but the opener didn’t have a fine-fettle outing. Warner lost his wicket on the first ball itself. Mohammad Kaif questioned the intent of the opener when he stepped out with Prithvi Shaw and again hesitated to face the first ball against Mumbai Indians. Kaif tweeted,

“When Warner opens with Shaw, he doesn’t take strike. In the last game to ease Sarfraz, he took strike but got out first ball. Should Warner protect the youngster or should Sarfraz shield the team’s best batsman? Cricket or chess? Bahut mushkil sawaal.”

Mohammad Kaif has earlier worked as a coach of the Delhi Capitals but the former Indian cricketer couldn’t stretch his contract with the side. Under Kaif’s mentorship, the DC has maintained their aura in the league and has silenced giants of the IPL by qualifying for playoffs multiple times.
