IPL 2021: Fans to return to the stadium for the resumption of the league in UAE

For the first time since 2019, fans will make a return to the stadium to watch the IPL 2021 season that will resume this weekend after shifting to the UAE.

Cricket fans will be allowed back into the stadiums for the resume of the IPL 2021 season as the second phase kicks off in a clash between the five-time winners and current title holders Mumbai Indian as they take on the three-time winners Chennai Super Kings on the 19th of September at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Crowds will be making a return for the first time since the 2019 edition of the IPL as this is the second edition of the league that played during the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year the BCCI shifted the tournament to the UAE where the tournament was played in an empty stadium behind closed doors. The first half of the 2021 edition was played behind closed doors as well but this time in India during the spike in positive cases in the country which eventually entered the secure bio bubble of the players and staff. Several members from four separate franchises tested positive which brought a stop to the cricketing action as the tournament was suspended indefinitely on the 3rd of May earlier this year after having 29 matches played.

“This match will be a momentous occasion as IPL will welcome the fans back to the stadiums after a brief hiatus owing to the COVID-19 situation,” said the leagues’ press release. Although it read that there will be a limited number of fans allowed, the media press release did not specify the percentage of the crowd that will be gain entry into the stadium. The exercise will help and work as a rehearsal for both the UAE and the BCCI for the upcoming men’s T20 World Cup 2021 that is scheduled to begin from the 17th of October. Oman will also be learning from the crowd management rehearsal as they are the joint hosts for the World Cup along with the UAE.

Fans will be able to buy their tickets starting from the 16th of September from the official website of the Indian Premier League.
