Ravichandran Ashwin struck on the very first ball to replace Karun Nair. Three balls later, he flung back the serious Nicholas Pooran for a duck to reduce Kings XI Punjab to 34 for 3 in the 6th over. The very next ball, he appeared to have broken his shoulder. Glenn Maxwell struck a decent drive and the spinner made a jump to try and defend the ball.

However, he landed clumsily and injure his left shoulder. He was quickly seen grimacing in discomfort and pain while gripping his left shoulder before escorting off the field. Ajinkya Rahane substituted him in the field.
