England batter Harry Brook has been banned from the Indian Premier League (IPL) for two seasons after withdrawing from the 2025 edition at the last minute. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has implemented a rule that bars overseas players from participating in the IPL for two seasons if they opt out after being picked in the auction, except in cases of injury.
Brook’s last-minute withdrawal
Brook, who was bought by Delhi Capitals (DC) for IPL 2025, made himself unavailable for the tournament earlier this week. In an official statement, he extended an unreserved apology to the franchise and its supporters.
“I have made the very difficult decision to pull out of the upcoming IPL. I apologize unreservedly to the Delhi Capitals and their supporters,” Brook stated on social media.
BCCI’s decision and IPL regulations
As per the BCCI’s regulations, any foreign player who withdraws after being picked at the auction—unless due to injury—will face a two-year ban from the IPL and future auctions.
A BCCI official confirmed the ban, stating, “There was a rule in place, and that has been implemented. The ban covers the 2025 and 2026 editions.”
This rule was formally communicated to IPL franchises last year, ensuring that players who voluntarily opt out do not disrupt team preparations.
Brook’s reason for opting out
The England batter cited his commitment to England cricket as the primary reason for his withdrawal. With a home Test series against India in June, followed by the much-anticipated Ashes from November to January, Brook expressed his need to rest and prepare for national commitments.
“In order to do this, I need time to recharge after the busiest period in my career to date. I know not everyone will understand, and I don’t expect them to, but I have to do what I believe is right, and playing for my country remains my priority and focus,” he added.
This is Brook’s second consecutive IPL withdrawal, having previously pulled out of the 2024 season following the death of his grandmother.
Impact of the ban
Brook’s absence is a significant setback for Delhi Capitals, who had invested in the English batter for the 2025 season. His ban until 2027 also means he will be unavailable for future auctions during this period.
For the IPL and franchises, this decision reinforces the BCCI’s strict stance on player commitment, ensuring that teams do not lose key players unexpectedly after the auction.
