Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer is all praises about head coach Ricky Ponting. He believes that he has had a great impact on the batsman’s game. Shreyas Iyer was made the captain of the side in the middle of the 2018 season when Gautam Gambhir decided to step down from the position.
Iyer, a young captain tried his best to reach up to the expectations of the management but couldn’t help the team from ending last on the table. In 2019 under his guidance, the team finished third and just missed the final by an inch. With the 13th season of the league about to begin in September, Shreyas opened up about the Aussie legend. Ricky Ponting has had a very big influence on his game and Iyer said that he gives him the freedom to express himself on the field.
“I feel blessed to be working with someone as Ricky Ponting’s stature so closely. He is such a legend and makes everyone from the most senior one to the newest guy feel at home and as a part of the unit,” Iyer said in the recent video uploaded on BCCI official website. “As a captain, he gives me freedom and that has helped me grow as a cricketer,” the right-handed batsman further added.
On being asked if Delhi Capitals is looking forward to lifting the title this year, he believes the team contribution and efforts will decide that. “The one thing that worked for us last season was how differently each player stepped up on different occasion and that was crucial for our success and will be this year too. Having not one consistent performer but many of them,” Iyer said before signing off.
