Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajinkya Rahane suffered a painful finger injury during a crucial Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday.
The incident took place on the first ball of the 12th over while Andre Russell was bowling to Faf du Plessis, who was anchoring DC’s innings with fluent stroke play. Russell delivered a no-ball — a half-volley outside off — which du Plessis drove towards extra cover, where Rahane was fielding.
In an effort to stop the ball, Rahane misfielded and took a direct blow to his finger, which was seen bleeding immediately. The physio was rushed onto the field as the skipper appeared visibly in pain. Moments later, Rahane was escorted off the ground, leaving KKR temporarily without their leader in what is a do-or-die encounter for the franchise.
KKR, already under pressure from the aggressive DC batting lineup, faced a setback with the captain’s injury adding to their challenges. Rahane’s injury came at a critical phase in the match when KKR was pushing hard to stay in the contest.
There is no official update yet on the severity of the injury or whether Rahane will return to bat if required.
KKR are currently battling to stay alive in the playoff race and a full-strength squad is essential at this stage. Fans and team management alike will be hoping for a swift recovery for the veteran leader.
