The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) prepares the blueprint for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Two new franchises, player retention and a mega auction, increments in the salary purse and fresh media rights. All these will be unrolled between August 2021 and January 2022. In mid-August, the tender of documents for new franchises will be out.
In mid-October, the new franchises will be introduced. The last month of this year will have a mega auction. In the next year mid-January, the tender document for media rights sale will be revealed. The BCCI is preparing to increase the salary purse from Rs 85 crores to Rs 90 crores for the 10 franchises. Franchises that will retain players must deduct the specified sums from their salary purse. The criteria for salary deduction should be: ₹15 crores, ₹11 crores and ₹7 crores if the franchise is retaining three players.
₹8.5 crores, if they are retaining two players and ₹12.5 crores, if they are retaining only one player. The board is also planning the big media-rights auction too, towards the end of this year. Although, the pandemic has witnessed a rise in the OTT space as against the traditional linear broadcast and the factor alone will dictate the rights industry in the coming months.
