Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has raised concerns about the trend of England players pulling out of IPL 2024 at the eleventh hour. With speculation surrounding Delhi Capitals’ new recruit Harry Brook’s potential withdrawal from the upcoming season, Chopra took to social media to issue a tongue-in-cheek warning to IPL franchises.
In a tweet, Chopra cautioned IPL teams about the risks associated with buying England players at the auction. His message comes amid reports of several England cricketers withdrawing from the IPL, including Mark Wood, Gus Atkinson, and Jason Roy.
If Harry Brook indeed withdraws from Delhi Capitals’ squad, he would join the ranks of England players opting out of IPL 2024 ahead of the season. Brook’s topsy-turvy IPL debut with SunRisers Hyderabad in the previous season likely adds to the franchise’s concerns.
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) suffered a significant blow with Jason Roy’s withdrawal, citing workload management and family commitments. KKR promptly replaced Roy with fellow England batter Phil Salt. Additionally, fast bowler Gus Atkinson pulled out of IPL 2024 after the England cricket board sought to manage his workload following the demanding Test series against India.
Mark Wood, who featured in the Test series against India, also withdrew from IPL 2024 after being bought by Lucknow Super Giants, citing workload concerns. These withdrawals highlight the challenges faced by IPL franchises in managing player availability and team composition ahead of the highly anticipated tournament.
