IPL 2020 Sponsorship: Unacademy and Tata sons front runners in acquiring Title sponsorship

With Chinese company VIVO withdrawing from IPL Sponsorship, Indian companies compete for the position.

IPL 2020 has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic thus had to be shifted overseas to UAE. It was itself a logistical challenge to shift the Tournament away from India but a major blow came in after VIVO, the title sponsor, decided to pull out of this 2020 season sponsorship. BCCI, since then, has had options to consider before the IPL season is under way on 19th of September.

Tata Sons and Unacademy are in a tussle to obtain the sponsorship along with some parties such as Reliance Jio, Patanjali and Byju’s. BCCI is keen to tie with a brand who does not have a Chinese influence or who does not have any associations with China. Tata’s entry has changed the race but it will be interesting to see are they willing to cough up 440 crores which was the current deal with VIVO.

This has to kept in mind that this sponsorship only last for 5 months but with the popularity of the game and the tournament no one would miss out on such an opportunity. Unacademy and Byju’s, the online learning giants, have also placed their bids. But Byju’s having Chinese investors, they are unlikely to get the nod ahead of Tata and other competitors.

Patanjali and Reliance Jio have too shown intent to have their name on the tournament but the final bid on August 18 will determine who has the struck accords with the BCCI to be the title sponsors of IPL 2020.
