Virat Kohli produced a masterful knock under pressure, scoring a brilliant 135 off 120 balls to guide India to a commanding total of 349/8 in the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi. His innings, filled with 11 fours and 7 sixes, set up India’s 17-run victory as the visitors were eventually bowled out for 332 (49.2 overs) despite a spirited lower-order fightback.
Speaking after receiving the Player of the Match award, Kohli said his approach has become more mental than physical at this stage of his career.
“Today was really nice to kind of get into the game like that. Pitch played decently in the first 20-25 overs before it started to slow down. Was just about staying in the space of enjoyment.”
Reflecting on his experience, Kohli added:
“Of course when you get a start, you know what needs to be done. The experience kicks in. I’ve never been a believer of preparation. All my preparation is mental.”
The 37-year-old also highlighted the importance of recovery:
“I took a day off before the game. I’m 37 and need time for recovery. If you’ve played 300-odd games, you know when the reflexes are there. As long as you’re hitting the ball well and mentally sharp, that’s enough.”
With this win, India take a 1–0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
