IND vs NZ Day 5: Virat Kohli urges Rohit Sharma for DRS as India finally gets Conway’s crucial wicket in fourth-innings defense

As India defends a modest target of 107 runs on Day 5 of the first Test against New Zealand at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, Virat Kohli once again showcased his involvement in crucial moments on the field. During New Zealand’s tense chase, India managed to dismiss the dangerous Devon Conway, with Jasprit Bumrah trapping him lbw for 17 (39). However, it wasn’t an easy decision for the on-field umpire.

In an unexpected twist, umpire Michael Gough, usually reliable with his decisions, failed to raise his finger despite the delivery appearing plumb. Even India’s fielders behind the stumps, including the wicketkeeper, were less enthusiastic. But Bumrah, adamant that Conway was out, convinced Kohli to urge Rohit Sharma to take the DRS.

The DRS call proved to be a masterstroke, as replays confirmed Conway was trapped right in front. The ball pitched on a full length, and Conway played inside the line, misjudging its trajectory as it crashed into his pads, right in front of off stump. The decision was overturned, and Conway had to walk back, leaving New Zealand at 35/2.

Bumrah’s clever use of angles, particularly coming around the wicket, paid off as India secured the vital second wicket in their defense of the low target. Kohli’s quick thinking and Bumrah’s persistence combined to give India a chance to tighten their grip on the game.
