India won against Australia in the first test of the four-test series in the Gavaskar-Border trophy. Ravichandran Ashwin’s five wickets while Ravindra Jadeja’s and Mohammed Shami’s two wickets saw Australia all out for just 91 runs in the second innings. In the first innings, Australia scored just 177 runs, Rohit Sharma scored 120 runs, and Axar Patel scored 84 runs, which helped India take a massive lead of 223 runs to set a 400 runs target in the first innings for the Australian. Ravindra Jadeja won the player of the match award. The Aussie side was blown all out for 177 runs for the first time.
The Australian captain Pat Cummins said at the post-match presentation, “the game moves quickly. You have to manage your tempos. Though India played well, their spinners will always be hard work when the wicket is spinning, and I thought Rohit showed his class. In that first innings, the door spun but wasn’t unplayable. I would have loved another 100 runs and put more pressure on their first innings. Starting here is tough, but three or four of our guys got in and looked comfortable in the first innings. Those guys who do get in must turn it into big scores.” The captain praised debutant Todd Murphy, saying, “He was fantastic on debut. He’s been imposing. Bowled plenty overs.” Todd Murphy impressively got seven wickets for just 124 in the first innings.
