IND v ENG: Jasprit Bumrah set to lead India as Rohit Sharma ruled out of the Edgbaston test

With a major setback for India it is now official that Rohit Sharma won’t play in the fifth test, which begins on Friday in Edgbaston. Jasprit Bumrah will captain India in the series deciding test in his unavailability.

The first paceman to captain India in Test cricket since Kapil Dev will be Jasprit Bumrah.

Even though he did not bat in the second innings after Roman Walker eliminated him for 25 in the first, Rohit was part of the Indian team that played Leicestershire in a four-day warm-up game. Mayank Agarwal has already been called up by India for the Edgbaston match, which begins on July 1.

Since he tested positive for Covid-19 on Saturday (June 25), Rohit, who was India’s finest batsman with 368 runs at 52.27 in the four Tests of the series last year, has been kept in isolation.

“Team India captain Mr Rohit Sharma has tested positive for COVID-19 following a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) conducted on Saturday. He is currently in isolation at the team hotel and is under the care of the BCCI Medical Team. An RT-PCR test will be conducted on Sunday to ascertain his CT value,” stated in a BCCI statement.

India is leading 2-1 in the Test series against England. Earlier this year, Rohit led India to a 2-0 home Test series victory against Sri Lanka.

Last year, India under Virat Kohli held a 2-1 lead over England, but the fifth and final Test had to be postponed because of a Covid outbreak in the Indian camp.
