ICC nominates Rishabh Pant and two others for ICC Men’s Player of the Month


Having helped in India’s historic win against Australia, wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant was nominated for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award along with England captain Joe Root and Ireland’s Paul Stirling on Tuesday.

The International Cricket Council announced the nominees for the first Player of the Month Award which will “recognize and celebrate the performances by both male and female cricketers across all forms of international cricket throughout the year”.

Pant scored 97 at Sydney to ensure a draw before an unbeaten 89 at Brisbane that led India to a historic series-clinching win against Australia.

Root played two Test matches against Sri Lanka in January where he scored a magnificent 228 in the first Test and 186 in the second to lead his team to 2-0 Test series victory.

Stirling, on the other hand played two ODIs against UAE and three against Afghanistan, where he scored three centuries.

Women cricketers who were nominated were Pakistan’s Diana Baig and the South African duo of Shabnim Ismail and Marizanne Kapp.

Baig played three ODIs and two T20Is against South Africa, wherein she took nine wickets in the three-match ODI series against South Africa.

Ismail also played three ODIs and two T20Is against Pakistan and took seven wickets in the ODI series against Pakistan, before taking five wickets in the second T20I against the same opposition.

Her fellow teammate, all-rounder Marizanne played two ODIs and two T20Is against Pakistan wherein she scored 115 runs at a strike rate of 110.57 and added three wickets in the ODI series against Pakistan.

ICC stated that its Voting Academy, comprising of prominent members of the cricketer family including senior journalists, former cricketers, broadcasters and some members of the ICC Hall of Fame will primarily choose the winner.
