ICC discloses how a single message prompted Moeen Ali’s return from Test retirement

All-rounder Moeen Ali is set to make an unexpected return to Test cricket as he gears up to face England’s arch-rivals, Australia, in the upcoming Ashes series. Having announced his retirement from Test cricket in September 2021, Moeen had not played a Test match for England since then. However, a message from England captain Ben Stokes reignited Moeen’s Test career, leading to his late call-up to replace the injured Jack Leach in the England squad.

The catalyst for Moeen’s return to the Test squad was a one-word message from captain Stokes, who simply asked, “Ashes?” Moeen initially thought Stokes was joking and responded with a light-hearted “LOL.” Unbeknownst to Moeen at the time, Leach had suffered a back injury, creating an opportunity for the all-rounder to be back in contention for Test cricket. Following his retirement from Tests, Moeen continued to play for England as a white-ball specialist. He played a vital role in England’s triumph at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022. While Moeen excelled in limited-overs cricket, his Test career had showcased his versatility as an off-spinner and a capable lower-order batsman. In 64 Tests, he amassed 2914 runs at an average of 28.29, including five centuries, and claimed 195 wickets at an average of 36.66.

When Moeen retired, he believed his Test career had come to an end. However, the unexpected turn of events, with Leach’s injury and Stokes’ message, presented Moeen with a fresh opportunity. He now sees this call-up as a “free hit” without the pressure of playing for his spot. Moeen sought advice from former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum, who assured him that his performance would not be the sole determining factor.

Moeen has faced challenges against Australia in Test cricket, with limited success against them as a spinner. In 11 Tests, he has taken 20 wickets at an average of 64.65, with Australia targeting him to score at a high run rate. However, Moeen is well aware of what to expect from the Australian team this time and understands his role if selected in any of the five Ashes Tests starting on June 16.
