ICC decides to introduce DRS in Men’s Cricket World Cup for the first time

Apart from this, ICC has also revised some rules for the minimum number of overs to be played in a delayed or rain-affected match.

Along with several players who will be making their world cup debut for their respective teams, ICC has decided that DRS (Decision Review System) will also be used in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021.  The Umpire’s Decision Review System was first introduced in test cricket and tested in the match between India and Sri Lanka in 2008. It was in 2009 that ICC officially launched it. Slowly and gradually, the new tech became an integral part of cricket. Now, one cannot imagine cricket, which is a game of small margins, without DRS.

While it is used in every type of cricket, whether franchise or International, the system was yet to become a part of the Men’s T20 World Cup. This is because, it was in 2016 when this tournament was played last, and back then the DRS was yet to be implemented in the T20I format. Now, according to the rules and playing conditions released by ICC this week, every team will be allowed to have unsuccessful reviews per inning. This might sound strange as the previous rule was only 1 review per inning, but ICC has clarified that because of the COVID-19 restriction there are chances that more inexperienced Umpired will be partaking in the tournament.

Apart from this, ICC has also revised some rules for the minimum number of overs to be played in a delayed or rain-affected match. According to the new rules, the teams will be required to pay a minimum of 5 overs, while in the knockout stages the DLS rule will only be applicable after 10 overs of play. With these new sets of rules, the tournament is all set to commence on the 17th of October.
