Happy Birthday Gautam Gambhir, the two time world champion turns 40 today

If there was an award for the most subtle and deft player, then Gautam Gambhir would have definitely won it every year he played the game of cricket. He has played an immense role in some of the most famous victories of India, over the year, yet somehow he remained unnoticed. Therefore, on the occasion of his 40th birthday, let’s look back at some of his match-winning performances and records that the left-hander has accumulated over the years.

Gambhir’s success story began in 2007 when he played an immensely important knock in the final of the inaugural T20 World Cup. He scored a quickfire 75 to help his team post a competitive total against Pakistan. Later in the year 2008, he was once again the highest run-getter for his team in the Commonwealth Bank Tri-Series. India Won that series beating Australia in the final. Gambhir in that series scored 440 runs in his 10 matches at an average of 55. In 2009, India became the number 1 test-playing nation of the world, and guess who was the Test player of the year? Yes, it was Gautam Gambhir, who showed great temperament with the bat in his hand.

India won another major tournament in the year 2010, as they defeated Sri Lanka in the final of the Asia Cup by a margin of 84 runs. In that series too, Gambhir was the leading run-scorer for India. He scored 203 runs in just 4 innings. It was finally in the 2011 world cup that his heroics were recognized by the entire country. While chasing the target of 275, India lost some quick and early wickets. But Gambhir held on to one end, as he scored a match-winning knock of 97 runs. He was also the second-highest run-scorer for India in the tournament.
