Former Head Coach Mahela Jayawardene congratulates newly appointed Mark Boucher to take over as MI Head Coach

Former South Africa keeper-batter coach Mark Boucher has been named the head coach of the Mumbai Indians. After the 2019 T20 World Cup, Boucher, who is now performing the same job for South Africa, will leave the national team.

Mahela Jayawardene, a former captain of Sri Lanka, has been MI’s head coach since 2017. He is replaced by Boucher now. Mumbai Indians have three championships under Mahela’s guidance. Jayawardene has been promoted to a new position as the Global Head of Performance as a result of the franchise expanding its reach and securing teams in both the SA20 and the ILT20.

The club management has promoted Mahela Jayawardene and Zaheer Khan to new positions as members of a central team—Global Head of Performance and Global Head of Cricket Development, respectively—in light of Mumbai Indians Emirates and Mumbai Indians Cape Town joining the MI family.

Mark, he is an exciting coach, the way he has transformed South Africa’s white-ball cricket in the last two years. He has been brilliant and he is also someone that we felt who we think differently and will contribute in a very positive way to Mumbai Indians,”  he said.

Especially when we have a group of players with the skill set that we have. Then we have a younger group coming through as well, so that’s the transition we need to manage. We feel that Mark is going to be the best man for that,” Jayawardene added.
