England have got carried away with Bazball: Sir Geoffrey Boycott

England’s bold ‘Bazball’ tactic received backlash following Australia’s narrow two-wicket win in the opening Ashes Test at Edgbaston. While this aggressive style has brought success against other teams, England’s primary objective remains reclaiming the Ashes from Australia.

Sir Geoffrey Boycott expressed concerns over England’s emphasis on entertainment rather than winning, emphasizing the need to focus on the ultimate goal. Despite demonstrating the advantages of their approach during the match, England’s defeat has raised doubts about their strategy. Moving forward in the series, England must strike a balance between providing entertaining cricket and ensuring victory to fulfill the aspirations of their supporters for an Ashes triumph.

“England have got carried away with Bazball and seem to think entertaining is more important than winning,” the 82-year-old wrote in the Telegraph. “But England supporters want one thing more than anything else – to win the Ashes. Scoring fast runs, whacking lots of fours and sixes is lovely. It is great. But only if England do not lose sight of the big prize which is to beat Australia. If at the end of the series Australia go home with the Ashes we will feel sick, regardless of how much we have been entertained.”
