It is understood that Rohit has been asked to communicate his future plans, and while retirement remains his personal decision, the selection panel will assess the best leadership approach for India’s transition towards the next World Cup.
Shubman Gill being groomed as future captain
The management is reportedly grooming Shubman Gill as the next potential leader. Gill has already been named vice-captain for India in the Champions Trophy 2025 and could be considered a long-term option for the ODI and Test formats.
BCCI to wait for Rohit’s decision
“The board will wait for Rohit’s decision after the Champions Trophy final. If he chooses to step down, then the selectors will take the necessary steps to appoint a successor. One can’t discount the fact that he won the T20 World Cup in 2024 and has led the side brilliantly in the Champions Trophy, but the focus is on building for the 2027 ODI World Cup,” the report added.
