A senior Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official has dismissed any possibility of removing Gautam Gambhir as India’s head coach following the 0-2 Test series defeat against South Africa. The loss marked India’s second home whitewash within a year and Gambhir’s third overall Test series defeat since taking charge in 2024.

Despite the setback, the board has made it clear that no drastic decision will be taken. According to The Indian Express, a BCCI official said the team is currently in a “transition phase” and the board is not considering Gambhir’s removal, especially with the T20 World Cup approaching and his coaching contract running until the 2027 ODI World Cup.

“The BCCI will not rush in taking any decision, the team is in a transition phase. As far as coach Gautam Gambhir is concerned, we will not take any decision on him as the World Cup is around the corner and his contract is till the 2027 World Cup. The BCCI will speak to selectors and team management going ahead but there won’t be any knee-jerk action,” the official said.

Under Gambhir’s tenure, India’s Test results include:
– 2-0 win vs Bangladesh
– 0-3 loss vs New Zealand
– 1-3 loss vs Australia
– 2-2 draw vs England
– 2-0 win vs West Indies
– 0-2 loss vs South Africa

Speaking after India’s 408-run defeat in the Guwahati Test — the largest Test loss in the country’s history — Gambhir reiterated that the decision on his future rests entirely with the board.

“It is for the BCCI to decide. Indian cricket is important; I am not important,” he said. “I am the same guy who got results in England and won the Champions Trophy and Asia Cup. This is a team which is learning.”
