In a bid to safeguard the future of Test cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has unveiled a groundbreaking incentive scheme for players participating in the longest format of the game. Under this scheme, players involved in Test squads, including non-playing members, will receive financial rewards.
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah emphasized the importance of preserving Test cricket and ensuring that players are duly recognized for their contributions to the format. The move has garnered praise from former England captain Kevin Pietersen, who commended Shah’s efforts in upholding the significance of Test cricket.
According to the scheme, players featuring in over 50% of Test matches in a year will receive a substantial incentive of Rs 30 lakh, with non-playing members entitled to Rs 15 lakh per match. Those participating in 75% of Tests will earn Rs 45 lakh per game, while non-playing members will receive half of that amount.
This initiative aligns with the BCCI’s commitment to prioritize red-ball cricket, as evidenced by recent actions such as withholding central contracts from players neglecting domestic red-ball cricket.
However, India coach Rahul Dravid expressed his hope that the rewards serve as a form of recognition rather than a mere incentive. Dravid emphasized the intrinsic value of Test cricket and its unique challenges, underscoring the need for genuine passion and commitment from players.
While financial incentives are welcomed, Dravid stressed the importance of celebrating the enduring legacy of Test cricket and the remarkable achievements of players like R. Ashwin, who recently played his 100th Test match.
The BCCI’s proactive stance towards Test cricket comes at a crucial time when the format is facing challenges globally, highlighting the need for collective efforts to preserve its integrity and legacy.
