Bangladesh delays captaincy decision, awaits Shakib al Hasan’s availability

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is yet to finalize the successor of Tamim Iqbal as the next ODI captain of the national team. BCB president Nazmul Hassan stated that they need to know about Shakib al Hasan’s availability before making the appointment.

Tamim recently stepped down as ODI captain due to a back injury, leaving the post vacant. Initially, Litton Das was considered as a replacement if Tamim was unavailable for the upcoming Asia Cup. However, with Tamim’s decision to step down permanently, Shakib emerged as the front-runner due to his extensive experience.

Nazmul emphasized the importance of a long-term captaincy solution, considering both the bilateral series and the upcoming World Cup. He acknowledged Shakib as the obvious choice but raised concerns about his availability for two years.

The BCB aims to avoid hasty decisions and carefully assess the options. The selection panel needs to name the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup promptly, and the appointment of the ODI captain is crucial for team preparations.

Head coach Chandika Hathurusingha is expected to join on August 8, initiating skill training to prepare the team for the Asia Cup, scheduled for August 30 in Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
