Babar Azam features as the captain of ICC’s Team of the Tournament, no Indian included

Considering the lack of impactful performances by the Indians, the jury decided against including any Indian name.

The ICC’s team of the tournament for T20 World Cup 2021 is out, and it is a little surprising to see that it features no Indian in it. The team consists of players across six nations, including Sri Lanka and South Africa, with Pakistan’s Captain Babar Azam named the squad’s skipper.
This was one of the rare tournaments for the Indian Cricket team, where they failed to make it past the group stage. They lost their first two matches of the group stages, in which they played against Pakistan and New Zealand. Later they won three games on the trot against Afghanistan, Scotland, and Namibia, respectively, but couldn’t quite make the cut.

Considering the lack of impactful performances by the Indians, the jury decided against including any Indian name. At the same time, they chose Markham and Nortje from South Africa and Asalanka and Hasaranga from Sri Lanka, despite their teams too failing to make it to the semis. The majority of the team comprised players belonging to the teams who made it to the semifinals.

Former pace bowler and a member of the committee Ian Bishop shared his thoughts about the team. He said, “This team was incredibly difficult to select over such a highly competitive tournament. Selections were based predominantly on the super 12 onwards to the final.”

The final lineup adjourned by the selectors looked like this: David Warner (Australia), Jos Buttler (wk) (England), Babar Azam (Captain) (Pakistan), Charith Asalanka (Sri Lanka), Aiden Markham (South Africa), Moeen Ali (England), Wanidu Hasaranga (Sri Lanka), Adam Zampa (Australia), Jos Hazlewood (Australia), Trent Boult (New Zealand), Anrich Nortje (South Africa). Pakistan pace bowler Shaheen Afridi was named as the 12th man.
