
India’s Nikhat Zareen knock’s-out reigning World Champion Ekaterina Paltceva to cruise into the women’s 51 kg quarterfinals at the Bosphorous Boxing tournament in Istanbul.
The Asian championship bronze medallist, Zareen caused a major upset on the second day of the tournament on Wednesday when she out- punched the Russian boxer 5-0.
The Indian boxer will have yet another tough round ahead, as she will be facing two-time world champion Kyzaibay Nazym of Kazakhstan in her Quarterfinal bout.
Besides Zareen, 2013 Asian champion Shiva Thapa, Sonia Lather and Parveen also registered wins and proceeded to the quarterfinals in their respective categories.
Thapa defeated Kazakhstan’s Smagulov Baghtiyov by 3-2 in the men’s 63kg category. While world championship silver medallist Lather (57kg) and Parveen (60kg) beat local favourites Surmeneli Tugcenaz and Ozyol Esra by 5-0 in their respective women’s second-round matches.
Meanwhile. on the other hand, Duryodhah Negi (69kg), Brijesh Yadav (81kg) and Krishan Sharma (+91kg) lost their preliminary round bouts.
The third day of the tournament would be full of excitement as some Indian boxers will be seen in action in their respective Quarter-Final bouts.
