Malaysia’s rising mixed doubles shuttler Jimmy Wong finds himself at a crucial turning point, with uncertainty surrounding both his partnership and career direction.

Speculation has intensified following the end of his sponsorship deal with Victor on April 1, fuelling rumours of a potential return to the national setup under the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). When approached during a training session in Sri Petaling, Jimmy remained tight-lipped, stating that he would clarify his future in the coming days.

The 23-year-old’s partnership with Lai Pei Jing has also come to an apparent end. The duo, who only began playing together in March last year after the retirement of Tan Kian Meng, quickly emerged as one of Malaysia’s most promising mixed doubles pairs.

Despite not clinching a title, Jimmy and Pei Jing impressed with remarkable consistency, reaching seven finals and finishing as runners-up at the Macau Open and Korean Masters. Their rapid rise saw them climb to world No. 23 within a year  a significant achievement for a newly formed pair.

However, 2026 has been less favourable. The pair struggled in higher-tier tournaments, failing to reach the quarter-finals in seven consecutive events. Their withdrawal from the Asian Championships in Ningbo further signalled that changes were imminent.

The Swiss Open last month marked their final appearance together, closing a short yet impactful chapter. Jimmy later expressed gratitude to his sponsors and support system, while also acknowledging Pei Jing’s role in encouraging his transition into mixed doubles.

Having previously been dropped from the national team in 2022 after competing in men’s singles and doubles, Jimmy now appears poised for a possible recall. His next move whether returning to BAM or forming a new independent partnership could define the trajectory of his career.

Meanwhile, the experienced Pei Jing, now 34, is expected to seek a new partner as she looks to extend her time on the international circuit.
