Ashwini Ponnappa-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy break into top 20 in BWF rankings

India’s badminton mixed doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa broke into the world’s top 20 in the latest BWF ranking announced on Tuesday as a reward for their tremendous performance at the recent-concluded Asia leg.

They became the first Indian mixed doubles pair to reach the semi-finals of a world tour Super 1000 event at Toyota Thailand Open. This helped them jump 16 places and reach their career-best ranking of world number 19.The duo surprised the fifth-seeded Malaysians Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying in the quarterfinals.

While in the men’s doubles Satwik and Chirag Shetty retained their World number 10 spot after reaching the semi-finals at the Toyota Thailand Open.

In women’s singles, world champ PV Sindhu retained her World number 7 spot, while Saina improved a place to world number 19.

On the other hand, Kidambi Srikanth moved a spot to 13th, while other Indian players including B Sai Praneeth and Parupalli Kashyap slipped to 17th and 26th spot respectively.

After the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals, the BWF World Rankings were reopened. The first tournament to qualify for the Olympics would be the Swiss Open Super 300 which scheduled to be held from March 2 to 7.

The qualification period would end with the Indian Open, which would start on May 11. The rankings would be published on May 18 and this would be the deciding factor for choosing the players for the Olympics.

BWF had frozen the world rankings last March, saying standings as on March 17 will be the basis for entry and seeding when it restarts its international calendar.
