England finally found a breakthrough with the second new ball on Day 3 of the second Ashes Test at The Gabba, as debutant Gus Atkinson picked up his first-ever Ashes wicket, dismissing Australia’s wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey for a fluent 63.
The breakthrough came at a crucial moment, with Australia stretching their lead and Carey looking increasingly dangerous. Atkinson, operating with the harder new ball, delivered a back-of-a-length delivery that kicked up sharply. Carey attempted a slash through point but only managed an outside edge, thanks to the extra bounce generated by the second new ball.
England keeper Jamie Smith made no mistake behind the stumps, completing a clean catch to send Carey back. Australia moved to 417/8 (84.1 overs), leading England by 83 runs at the time of the wicket.
Carey’s innings — 63 off 69 balls, including six boundaries — was instrumental in pushing Australia ahead after a middle-order wobble. His partnership had kept England waiting, but Atkinson’s timely strike revived hopes of restricting Australia’s lead.
The wicket marks a significant moment for Atkinson, who has bowled with energy throughout the Test and has now found reward in his debut Ashes series.
With Australia still having two wickets in hand and Mitchell Starc batting on 20, the morning session remains finely balanced as England look to wrap up the innings quickly.
