Chelsea FC have moved quickly to secure one of their brightest academy prospects, agreeing a professional contract with highly-rated 16-year-old defender Calvin Diakite.

The deal, which runs until June 2028, rewards the Lewisham-born talent for his rapid rise through the Chelsea youth ranks. Diakite has already featured for the Chelsea U18s, U21s, and England youth teams, earning praise as a commanding, left-sided centre-back with excellent ball-playing ability.

Who Is Calvin Diakite? The Chelsea Academy Star Making Waves

Calvin Diakite, born on 7 April 2009, joined Chelsea’s academy as an Under-11 after being spotted by club scout Fiona Armfield while playing for Dynamo in Catford at the age of 10. He chose the Blues over rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Originally a central midfielder who idolised Yaya Touré, Diakite was converted to a defender in the academy. He models his game on former Chelsea star Antonio Rüdiger and has developed into a quick, composed, one-v-one specialist who excels with the ball at his feet.

By November 2024 (aged just 15), Diakite had already become a regular in the U18s — playing above his age group — and helped the side win multiple trophies at U16 level. He has since progressed to U21 and UEFA Youth League appearances, while captaining England U17s.

Details of Calvin Diakite’s New Chelsea Pro Deal

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have now formally agreed the professional contract with the talented defender:

“🚨🔵 Chelsea have agreed pro deal with 16 year old talented defender Calvin Diakite. Agreement valid until June 2028 with Diakite who’s been part of the Chelsea U21’s, U18’s and England youth team.”

The contract will formally kick in on or around his 17th birthday in April 2026, as is standard for academy graduates. It represents a significant step in Chelsea’s long-term youth development strategy under the current ownership.
