Tilak Varma’s hundred sets the tone
Tilak Varma made 101 off 45 balls, hitting 8 fours and 7 sixes, but the innings was split into two very clear phases.
He began slowly, making just 19 off his first 22 balls, as Gujarat Titans used pace variation, tight lines and controlled fields to keep him in check. At that stage, MI were steady but not yet explosive.
Then the match flipped completely. The next 23 balls produced 82 runs as Tilak changed gears almost instantly. He started clearing the field with ease, punishing anything short or even marginally full, and took control of the innings without risk becoming reckless.
The late surge was decisive. In the last six overs, Mumbai Indians added 96 runs to finish on 199 for 5, setting Gujarat Titans a target of 200. Tilak was the main driver of that acceleration, finishing unbeaten on a maiden IPL hundred in just 45 balls.
With this knock, Tilak Varma also joined an elite list of fastest IPL hundreds, matching Sanath Jayasuriya’s 45-ball century for Mumbai Indians.
MI innings built on partnerships and a late surge
Mumbai Indians lost early wickets after being asked to bat, with debutants Danish Malewar and Krish Bhagat in the XI. The innings needed stability, and Naman Dhir provided it with 45 off 32 balls.
His stand with Tilak Varma was crucial. Once settled, both accelerated and took MI from a rebuilding phase to full control. Hardik Pandya added a steady hand late in the innings, but the real damage came in the last five overs when MI added 96 runs.
They finished on 199 for 5, a total that proved far too much once conditions slowed.
GT collapse after Bumrah’s first-ball strike
Gujarat Titans never recovered after Jasprit Bumrah struck on the very first ball of the chase, dismissing Sai Sudharsan. That early breakthrough set the tone for a difficult innings.
Jos Buttler and Shubman Gill both fell early, while Kagiso Rabada briefly fought back with wickets of Quinton de Kock and others. But GT never built a partnership. Every small recovery was cut short by another wicket.
They were eventually bowled out for 100 in 15.5 overs, with no batter able to anchor the chase. This is Gujarat Titans’ biggest defeat in the IPL, by 99 runs.
MI bowlers dominate throughout
Ashwani Kumar was the standout with 4 for 24, removing key middle-order batters and breaking the chase wide open. Mitchell Santner added two wickets, while Hardik Pandya and Bumrah provided crucial breakthroughs.
Krish Bhagat kept things tight on debut, ensuring no easy runs. With wickets falling regularly, GT had no control over the innings at any stage.
Mumbai Indians completed a dominant 99-run win.
