Back to square one after another defeat

Hardik Pandya did not hide behind excuses after Mumbai Indians slipped to a fourth straight defeat, a seven-wicket loss to Punjab Kings on Thursday. It was also PBKS’ third successive win over MI, and they now hold the edge in overall meetings. Pandya’s words stood out “individuals”, “difficult calls” and “ownership”. Who was he referring to?

He pointed to conditions reverse swing early, dew later but accepted MI were outplayed in all departments. The message was clear: something has to change. But is it about personnel or approach?

Batting misfires, bowling lacks bite

The concerns are visible in the numbers. Suryakumar Yadav has one fifty but little else. Tilak Varma has struggled for runs. Jasprit Bumrah is yet to take a wicket this season. For a side built on experience, the returns have not matched expectations.

The absence of Rohit Sharma, ruled out for a few matches as confirmed by Pandya at the toss, has only added to the instability. Does that force a reshuffle, or do MI persist with the same core?

Management backs collective responsibility

Head coach Mahela Jayawardene took a measured view but echoed the concerns. He highlighted the lack of penetration with the ball and stressed that responsibility lies across the group, not just with the captain.

MI sit near the bottom with one win in five games. The next fixture against Gujarat Titans now carries added weight. Persist, or make changes that decision cannot wait much longer.
