Two-time Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen announced his retirement from professional badminton on April 15, 2026, at the age of 32. The Danish superstar cited persistent back injuries and nerve pain following surgery in April 2025, saying his body could no longer meet the rigours of elite competition. In his emotional statement, Axelsen reflected on a decorated career that included Olympic golds in Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, multiple World Championships, and years atop the world rankings.

The timing added poignancy. Just days before the announcement, 20-year-old Indian talent Ayush Shetty  often called the “Indian Axelsen” for his towering 6’4” frame, explosive attacking style, and court coverage  had impressed at the Badminton Asia Championships. Shetty, who trained with Axelsen in Dubai, shared a touching Instagram tribute featuring a photo of the two standing side-by-side on court.

In the caption, Shetty wrote: “You grow up watching players like Viktor Axelsen and thinking that’s the peak. Then you train with him and realise the peak is even higher. Watching him train, you understand why he stayed at the top. Nothing casual about it. Every session had intent. Every detail mattered.”

He continued: “Training with Viktor in Dubai, I saw how much goes into being that consistent, that dominant… Thank you for everything you’ve given to badminton. And thank you for showing us what it really takes.”

Axelsen replied warmly on the post: “So excited to follow you young man. All the best and always here should you want to chat. See you around a generous message of mentorship that resonated deeply with fans.

Shetty’s tribute highlights the Danish legend’s immense influence. The young Mangalore-born shuttler, who once idolised Axelsen, now stands as a leading light for India’s next generation. Having absorbed lessons on discipline and intensity during their Dubai sessions, Shetty embodies the continuation of that high standard.

As badminton bids farewell to one of its greatest, Axelsen’s legacy of excellence endures through rising stars like Shetty. The future of the sport looks promising.
